Just as in endurance sports training, you do not see any results by training for 1 week or 2 weeks or even any real material gain until at least 8 to 10 weeks (of course this is all relatively speaking) – same applies for your online biz. Don’t expect to make millions within the first month of being online – it aint gonna happen.

I’ve launched a few businesses, some in the real world, others completely online. Some have been successful, others have been complete abysmal failures – but I still kept going and never gave up. I had this same attitude when I decided to do the Ironman Triathlon back in 2005 – I couldn’t swim. Considering you have to swim 2.4 miles to START your day of the race, this is a pretty big obstacle to overcome. Unlike in the online world – where if you don’t know html or php, you can at least learn how to do that stuff without the risk of dying

In any case, I apply a lot of the same philosophies to my online business ventures that I do in training for Ironman. Slow and steady, one day at a time and above all else – be consistant. I’ll admit that now that I’m back “on the program” for training for Ironman 2010, my priorities and focus are shifting a little bit more towards my fitness as opposed to sitting in front of the computer – but the underlying motivation to be successful with my online efforts is still there – perhaps even more so.

What is great is, I am even integrating portions of my affiliate business with my triathlon training (I am the founder of GymSkinZ.com, an online triathlon apparel and accessories store as well as iwillnotbonk.com which is my triathlon training blog. They say that you should launch niche businesses in markets that you are familiar with and enjoy, and I am happy to say that I was able to do just that.

So having said all that, if you find you’re lacking some motivation or your online biz hasn’t taken off like you thought it would, don’t despair – you might just need a little spark to revive that competitive fire under your seat to get back on track. Treat your business like a 6 month or 1 year “training plan” – each week builds upon the previous one and at the end, you’ll feel way better than when you started and crossing that proverbial finish line will be that much more rewarding.

1. Outside Help. Seek objective, outside professional help. If you do it yourself, you will likely take your eye off the day to day running of the business, cause unnecessary anxiety, and either keep your business where it is or hurt it further.

2. Rethink Your Business. Think about current customers, competition, industry changes, and technology. Even rethink the type of business you are in. Many successful businesses have managed to stay that way by moving with the times. They saw the needs of their customers changing and acted accordingly.

3. Assess Your Company’s Current Status. Put everything on the table, both good and bad. Include aspects of the business you are proud of and issues you wish would just go away. Address issues relating to staff, products and services, location, profitability and new business development.

4. Keep Some Change Some. Determine what your customers like about you and what they would like to see changed. Be honest with yourself.

5. Maintain A Level Of Objectivity. Emotion has no place in this process. To achieve a successful marketing turnaround, you must do what is best for your company. This may mean letting long-term employees go or finding new suppliers.

6. Review The Past. Look carefully at your past marketing efforts. Examine past successes and failures. Well, although I haven’t implemented them on this particular blog (yet), according to all the stats I’ve read and just the sheer simple logic behind them, it’s hard to argue that Exit Popups will in fact convert a large share of your visitors without ANY additional effort on  your part.  If you have a website or blog or an adsense site or a PPC landing page or Squeeze page, etc etc etc – just think how many of your visitors (that you worked so hard to get to land on your page) are just clicking the back button – poof!   GONE! – probably never to be seen again.  However, if you present to them something very compelling at this point of exit – be it a bonus offer, free eBook, some sort of incentive for subscribing, etc etc – the chances are pretty good that they will at least take a few seconds to consider reading on.  If not, the visitor was probably a total tire-kicker/non-buyer anyway so it’s probably good they’re not taking any action and out of your hair forever.

It’s likely you’ll never see another blatant pitch for another product ever again from me – just raw, USEFUL information on how to help YOUR business. If something comes along that is worth writing about, I will mention it, but I won’t try to sell you on it – hopefully what you read in my blog will allow you to make that decision for yourself without me trying to sugar coat it and tell you how great it is – there’s SO MUCH useless turd IM products floating around these days, it’s a joke.

Blatantly pitching shit from clickbank for a 30-75% commission is a loser’s game now – I’m not a guru, and I don’t want to be – but I do want to make it that proverbial finish line with a big fat wallet – and I’ve now realized “direct linking” to other people’s crap via this blog or PPC in the hopes of making an affiliate commission is not the true way to build an online business – it’s a PART, but not the whole. How many pitches a day do you get from other marketers promoting OTHER marketers crap? Wouldn’t it make sense that if you bought something from them in the past, they actually took the time to see how/if you were becoming successful with the information you bought from them as opposed to constantly just pitching you more shit?

There’s only 3, maybe 4 people I’ve ever bought stuff from (I talk about them in my newsletter) that actually followed up on my purchase with a genuine interest on how I was doing with THEIR product and continue to add value – and I’ve bought stuff from TONS of people. The NORM in this twisted affiliate marketing world is, all these other so-called gurus sell you something, then apparently they have some sort of mental lapse that you bought a service or “system” from them that they claimed was going to help YOU – however, all they did was follow up with another pitch on yet ANOTHER product. Don’t they give a rat’s ass about the fact they just sold me something for $97 dollars so DON’T pitch me on the next product of the week before I’ve even gone thru your product. Don’t even get me started on “bonuses” – they offer bonuses that sometimes take months to even get – or they completely forget, or their bonus seems to be the priveledge to buy the next piece of crap product from them (?).

I won’t name names openly here, but in my newsletter I’ll talk about some of these idiots that not only have CRAPPY products, but their support is terrible, the “customer experience” was a joke (there was none), and rather than following up on their own system that I actually bought, all they continually do is pitch me on MORE shit from OTHER people – WTF. What is the value-add proposition there?

Anyway, enough of my rant – ‘X’ does it way more eloquently and this guy is the real deal who I intend on learning a lot from.
